Boston United Community Foundation backs National School Sport Week at Home

20th June 2020

Boston United Community Foundation is joining the Youth Sport Trust and Sky Sports to help young people and families up and down the country engage in a week of virtual sporting challenges.

With young people set to miss out on a school sport day this summer, the Youth Sport Trust’s annual National School Sport Week campaign is this year being opened up to parents and families and reinvented as National School Sport Week at Home.

Taking place from 20 to 26 June, the UK-wide campaign will give families, communities, schools and sports clubs the chance to capture the enjoyment, competition and camaraderie they have been missing out on during weeks of school closures and social distancing.

Boston United Community Foundation will be taking part in the week by sharing a variety of activity and games that people can take part in at home. Since the beginning of lockdown, the sports charity have been sharing regular digital content to help children and their families stay active, including P.E. from Home, virtual football sessions, cheer and dance routine ideas, various challenges, and afterschool activities. You can see all of their content on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/bufccf.

In previous years National School Sport Week has seen thousands of schools join in a week-long celebration of school sport and Physical Education, and their important role enhancing young people’s wellbeing.

This year, Sky Sports has teamed up with the Youth Sport Trust to supercharge the campaign, helping to inspire families across the country to take part. This builds on a long-term relationship between the broadcaster and charity.

Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive Ali Oliver said:

“The Youth Sport Trust is thrilled to see supporters like Boston United Community Foundation backing National School Sport Week at Home to ensure no child misses out on their school sports day this summer.

“Right now, young people are missing their friends and missing the sense of connection they get through sport. Sport has such a crucial role to play in promoting young people’s wellbeing and this has never been more apparent than it is now. After weeks of isolation we hope that YST National School Sport Week at Home 2020 can help bring families, communities, schools and sports clubs back together.”

Anyone can register to take part and will receive videos and activity cards to help them plan a series of challenges across the week for their families, neighbours, friends or colleagues.

BUFC Academy player accepts Bradford City football scholarship

12th June 2020

Congratulations to Boston United’s Under 16 academy football player Josh Burkitt who has accepted a two year football and education scholarship with English Football League – League Two side Bradford City, alongside a season long loan deal with Newark Football Club.

Technical Director and Head of Youth Lee Mitchell said, “Josh has been an integral part of Boston United’s football academy for the past few seasons. And as with all academy players, the dream is to play professional football – some go onto clubs at higher divisions and the majority we try to keep at the club and involve at the next level with our Under 19s football team, which forms part of the pathway to the first team.”

The club’s main focus is to produce well rounded individuals that have strong characteristics and leadership skills, and who are good communicators. We know if we give them the right tools alongside their football knowledge and skills, that they will be successful in anything they do, on and off the pitch.

“Josh is one of those players – we never had any doubts that he would be successful. He has shown that with his focus, determination and committment on his latest challenge of a half marathon everyday for a month.

“I had the pleasure of working with Josh in the states when he joined the squad for the Arizona tournament and was excited about the season ahead and getting to work more with him. He has a great maturity about him and fantastic leadership qualities for someone so young.

“Although we are sad to see Josh leave the club, he knows from conversations I have had with him that the door will always be open for him at Boston United.

We wish him all the best and every success on his journey, and we have no doubts that he will be successful and give it everything at Bradford.
