Sport and Exercise Sciences Extended Diploma Level 3

The Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science Extended Diploma is a two year course. During your first year you will study the Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science Foundation Diploma. This can be a standalone one year qualification, which is equivalent to three AS levels. Upon successful completion of the first year, you will then progress on to the second year to study the Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science Extended Diploma, which is equivalent to three A levels.

This course is designed for students who wish to gain a sports qualification to further their career aspirations in the sports and leisure industries, or prepare them for further training or higher education.

A range of units will be studied over the year, which will cover all aspects of Sport and Exercise including: practical, anatomy, physiology, psychology, training, coaching, injuries, and biomechanics.

You will study in our Sports Centre, The Peter Paine Performance Centre, which is open to the public outside of lessons providing you with a real working environment to study in that’s dedicated to ensuring you have all the skills you need for working in the industry.

What will I do?

During the Sport and Exercise Science Extended Diploma, you will study the following units:

Year One

  • Functional Anatomy
  • Applied Sport and exercise Psychology
  • Applied Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science
  • Applied Coaching for Performance and Fitness
  • Physical Activity for Individual and Group Based Exercise
  • Specialised Fitness Training

Year Two

  • Sport and Exercise Physiology
  • Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance
  • Field and Laboratory based Fitness Testing
  • Technology in Sport and Exercise Science
  • Sports Massage
  • Biomechanics for Sport and Exercise
  • Research Project

We have a variety of different teaching facilities including classrooms, human physiology and science laboratories, a sports field and sports hall. The College also has links with a variety of local sporting organisations.

In addition to your course, you may also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

Entry Qualifications

The entry qualifications for the Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science Extended Diploma are five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (Old GCSE grade C or above) including English (or equivalent).

You can also enter the course with a Merit profile at First Diploma in a related subject.
