9th May 2019

Boston United Pilgrim Cup - elite and academy football tournament

Boston United held their tenth academy and elite youth football tournament, The Pilgrim Cup over the bank Holiday in May – and despite the blustery weather conditions thousands turned out to support the event.

The elite football tournament saw 146 teams take part across nine age groups from Under 7 to Under 16, all playing to be crowned this year’s Pilgrim Cup winner! Over the two-day event, 471 games were played over 15 pitches, providing a fantastic action-packed bank holiday weekend full of competitive football.

Academy teams from far and wide came to challenge for the title including our own academy teams along with well-known clubs such as Birmingham City, Doncaster Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, Stoke City, Lincoln City FC, Peterborough United, York City, Kettering Town, Bristol Inner City and Chorley F.C. The tournament also featured elite sides including Qualitas, 780 Coaching, Deano’s Pro Soccer, Elite United, Santos Panthers, FITC Academy, PB Soccer, Nottingham Forest FDC and Future Football Elite to name just a few. We were also excited to welcome FDS Suomi, who travelled all the way from Finland to participate in the event.

The tournament kicked off on Saturday 4th May, and featured the Under 7/8s, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16, followed by the Under 9, Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 on Sunday 5th May. The winners across the two days were:

Ceri Jackson, one of the tournament organisers said, “Following on from last year’s success, we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. It was great to have so many academy teams taking part and we had thousands turn out to enjoy the event despite the weather, which was great to see. Every team who took part were a credit to their clubs, and there was some great sportsmanship on display.”

“We have received fantastic feedback, which really makes the event worth-while. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved, and of what is really and truly the best, most prestigious academy and elite youth football tournament in the area – The Pilgrim Cup!”

“We would like to thank everybody who helped make this tournament a huge success: staff members, volunteers, college students and referees, all the staff at RAF Cranwell, the teams, coaches, players, parents and supporters! We’ll see you all next year!”

Boston United have already started plans for their 2020 tournament, which will take place once again at RAF College Cranwell and so are looking forward to welcoming everybody once again and building on the huge success of this year’s event.
