Pathway into Coaching, PE teaching & The Sports Industry for 16 to 19-year-olds

What is Coach Academy?

The Boston United Coach Academy is a development pathway for students aged 16–19 enrolled on our SportBusinessPersonal Training, or Higher Education courses. Alongside your main qualification, you gain real coaching experience with the Boston United Community Foundation, building the skills, confidence, and qualifications needed for a future career in:

  • Sport coaching

  • PE teaching

  • Sports development

  • Community coaching

All coaching hours count towards your enrichment programme, taking place outside your normal timetable.

What You Study Alongside Your Course

The Coach Academy is designed to fit alongside your existing studies, allowing you to develop practical coaching experience while continuing your education. Whether you're aiming for a career in sport, education, or community coaching, you'll graduate with valuable qualifications and real-world experience.

Study Alongside Your Course

You can join the Coach Academy while studying:

  • Sport

  • Business

  • Personal Training

  • Higher Education (Level 4 and above)

By combining your academic studies with practical coaching, you'll build industry knowledge, develop professional skills, and gain experience that helps you stand out to future employers.

Qualifications You Could Gain

Every Coach Academy member can work towards gaining:

  • Level 1 Coaching Badge

  • Child Protection & Safeguarding Certificate

  • Emergency First Aid Qualification

  • Enhanced DBS Check

Students who demonstrate commitment, professionalism, and complete the required voluntary coaching hours may also progress to:

  • Level 2 Coaching Qualification(subject to performance, engagement, and professionalism throughout the programme).

Core Development Areas

Throughout the programme, you'll develop knowledge and practical skills in:

  • Professional standards

  • Safeguarding and child protection

  • Session planning

  • Delivering coaching sessions in schools

  • Behaviour management

  • Communication and leadership

  • Reflective practice

You'll also learn how to adapt coaching sessions for different ages, abilities, and participants with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring your coaching is inclusive, engaging, and effective.

Where You'll Coach

One of the biggest advantages of the Coach Academy is the opportunity to gain genuine coaching experience in a variety of settings.

Students regularly support and deliver sessions in:

  • Local primary schools

  • After-school clubs

  • Holiday camps

  • Community programmes

  • Matchday and event support

  • Academy coaching sessions

  • SEN clubs

  • Community football and sports teams

This hands-on experience gives you a genuine understanding of what coaching and PE delivery looks like in the workplace, helping you build confidence, develop your coaching style, and prepare for future employment in the sports industry.
