Youth Perspective Vs Wealdstone (12.9.26)
United’s first team coach and U23 supremo JAMIE RAYNOR talks about the progress of his young charges.
Good afternoon and welcome to the Jakemans Community Stadium for today’s fixture against Wealdstone. It’s been another productive period for the U23s, with the group continuing to benefit from a strong and varied fixture programme as we prepare the players for the demands of senior football.
One of the highlights in recent weeks was an excellent 4-1 victory over Accrington Stanley. It was a really positive performance from the group, with goals coming from Stephen Pereira, Jason Okunnu, a trialist and Jake Thompson. Games against this level of opposition provide a great test for the players and are an important part of their development.
It was also pleasing to see Liam Clayton complete 90 minutes against West Bromwich Albion U21s. Getting players valuable minutes against strong opposition is a key part of our programme, and Liam’s ability to play the full game was another positive step for him.
We’ll continue that challenging fixture programme in the coming weeks when we face Norwich City U21s. It will provide another excellent opportunity for the players to test themselves against a high-level academy side and continue to develop their understanding of the game.
Alongside the league and development fixtures, our attention will also begin to turn towards our County Cup campaign. Having won the competition last season, we’re determined to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to defend the trophy. Our next tie will see us face either Boston Town or Cleethorpes Town, so there is plenty for the group to look forward to.
The variety of fixtures we’re able to provide is hugely important to the development of our players. Every game presents a different challenge and gives the players an opportunity to learn, compete and show what they can do.
We’re pleased with the progress being made within the group and will continue to work hard to ensure every player is given the support and opportunities they need to take the next step in their development.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our Academy and U23 programme.
Enjoy today’s game. Up the Pilgrims!
